The President of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives met the representatives of United Nations (UN) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and negotiated with them at Iran Chamber of Cooperatives.
Bahman Abdollahi, President of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives met the representatives of the United Nations (UN) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and described the capacities of the cooperative sector.
In this meeting , he referred to the position of cooperative sector in the country’s economy and stated: ” The cooperative sector is defined by law as one of the three main pillars of the country’s economy alongside the public and private sectors.”
He continued: “Due to the broad goal setting for development of the cooperative sector, Iran Chamber of Cooperatives owns seats and votes in all national and main councils of the country and its membership in these councils indicates the importance of cooperative in Iran.”
The president of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives emphasized that all national decisions on development of the economy are focused on the cooperative sector and stated: ” Cooperators are active in all economic areas of the country and any development program in the country would be difficult without paying attention to the capacity of cooperative sector and the best platform for the planning of the people’s contribution is undoubtedly, the cooperative sector.”
He referred to the population coverage of the cooperative sector in the country and said: ” Almost half of our population are either cooperative members or receive services from this sector.”
In the meeting, the UN representative expressed her satisfaction of familiarity with capabilities of the cooperative sector, stated that she would share information and capacities of the cooperative sector with other organizations which their offices are located in Iran.”
She said:” The UN’s main focus is not just on the cooperative sector and its social dimensions are also important. The UN representative said: “We have set four main goals of health, the environment, the resilient economy and the fight against drugs in Iran.”
She continued :” Social protection of the vulnerable people is one of our priorities and we try to use the capacity in order to develop employment.”
The president of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives emphasized the social role of the cooperative in Iran beside its economic role and said :” The mission and social duties of the cooperatives are not less important than their economic role. For example, the most visible role of cooperatives to people were during the war.
He added:” “In current situation where the economy is suffering from cruel sanctions, cooperatives, as in the past are ready to carry out their social mission, such as providing basic commodities for people , women’s employment and empowering in various sectors of the economy.”
Mr .Abdollahi noted :” In this regard, Iran Chamber of Cooperatives is ready to form a joint working group with the aim of carrying out joint projects with the UN and UNDP in the field of cooperatives.”
